Biography:
Thomas William Carrington graduated from Strom Lake High School in the class of 1966 and attended Iowa State University until he was drafted into the Army in March 1968. Carrington was described by his classmates as friendly and happy. After training, SGT Carrington started his tour in Vietnam in August 1968. He served with the 1st Cavalry Division for almost an entire year in Southeast Asia. He was first stationed near the DMZ in the Quang Tri Province and then his entire division relocated south along the Cambodian border. Shortly before his departure from Vietnam, SGT Carrington was transferred to LZ Becky located between Tay Ninh and the Cambodian border. The landing zone was attacked by the enemy on August 11 and August 12, 1969. Twenty Two soldiers were killed during the incident including SGT Carrington. He was the first person killed from Storm Lake during the war. The 20-year-old’s body was buried at the Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery in Storm Lake.
