Biography:
Louis Newton Cooley Junior grew up in the Council Bluffs area and joined the Marine Corps in 1967. He trained as an electrician for a searchlight battery and arrived in Vietnam on June 27, 1967. The batteries were becoming an important part in MEDEVAC rescue efforts. He was attached to the 12th Marines/1st Searchlight battery based in Cua Viet in Quang Tri Province just south of the demilitarized zone. On December 16th, the port area was hit by a rocket attack and Cooley and three others were killed. Lance Corporal Cooley was buried in Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Council Bluffs.
