Biography:
Mark Steven Dreier grew up in Allamakee County and was educated in the Postville School District. He joined the Army in September 1968 and trained as an infantryman. PFC Dreier was sent to Southeast Asia in February 1969. He was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry in the 1st Cavalry Division. PFC Dreier was killed on June 2, 1969 on Banana Island in the Long Khanh Province while trying to clear a series of enemy bunkers along the Dong Nai River. Seven other Americans died during the engagement. Dreier was posthumously promoted to Corporal by the Army and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. The 19-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Postville Cemetery. A funeral service was held at the Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.
