Biography:
Lloyd Harms was born in Hampton before moving to Mason City as a young boy. He was a 1967 graduate of Mason City High School before joining the Marine Corps. PFC Harms deployed to South Vietnam in May 1968 as a rifleman with the 3rd Marine Division. In Vietnam he commonly was the radio operator while on patrol missions. On August 8, 1968 Harms was killed in Quang Tri Province from a headshot wound inflicted during combat with the enemy. During the incident, his unit commander was killed and Harms assumed leadership. He assisted several wounded comrades and directed the unit to return fire before being killed himself. For his actions during combat he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star. His twin brother, Floyd, was serving with the Marine Corps at the time of Lloyd’s death. PFC Harms’ body was buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
