Biography:
On November 16, 1966 Alan Dale Pittmann, from Shelby, was traveling to Thailand in an Air Force transport. During the flight over Laos the plane was shot down. The pilot, co-pilot, and Pittmann bailed out and safely reached the ground. The former were both rescued within 90 minutes but Pittmann became separated and was not found during two searches. A Laotian source reported Pittmann had been captured on November 17th and shot by the Viet Cong. No remains were ever located. Pittman was initially declared missing in action and later presumed killed.
