Biography:
Albert B Crouch was raised in southwest Appanoose County near the town of Numa. He graduated from Seymour High School in the class of 1966. His senior year of high school he was student body president and the salutatorian of his graduating class. Additionally, Crouch earned athletic letters all four years of high school in basketball, football, baseball, and track. Crouch went on to attend and graduate Centerville Community College. While in college he was a member of the Phi Beta Lambda Fraternity. Upon completing his education he joined the Army and trained as a helicopter pilot. Warrant Officer Crouch began a 12 month tour in South Vietnam in April 1970. He was killed in action only 18 days into his tour. On May 18, 1970 Crouch was transporting South Vietnamese forces into combat in the Kien Hoa Province. After deploying troops for the third time in a hot landing zone, his helicopter was hit by enemy fire. Crouch was hit in the head and died instantly. The chopper did not crash and no other Americans were injured during the incident. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Livingston Cemetery in Appanoose County.
