Biography:
Albert Du Ward Benson grew up in the Sidney area and graduated from Wayne State College in 1968 where he was a star track athlete. He volunteered for the Marine Corps and completed officer candidate school at Quantico in 1969. 2LT Benson arrived in Vietnam on March 15, 1969 and was attached to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. The unit was based in the “rocket belt” in Quang Nam Province west of Danang. On July 6th, Fox Company was hit by a mortar attack during a patrol. Benson died from multiple fragmentation wounds. He is buried in the Sidney Cemetery.
