Biography:
Allan Lee Schmidt grew up in Cedar County and was a 1967 graduate of Tipton Community High School. A year after school, in May 1968, Schmidt was drafted into the Army. After completing his training he was deployed to Vietnam in October 1968 as an infantryman with the 1st Cavalry Division. On November 5, 1968 PFC Schmidt was wounded during a firefight with enemy forces. He was rushed to the 24th Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh before dying from his injuries the following day. He had been in Vietnam for three weeks and four days at the time of his death. His 20-year-old body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Memorial Park in Davenport.
