Biography:
Allen James Avery attended the Sumner school district and was active in sports, particularly in baseball. He enlisted in the Marine Corps while still in school. Avery completed his boot and combat training at Camp Pendleton, CA. He was sent to Vietnam in June 1965 and served with Company C, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines as a rifleman. He died of multiple burns over his entire body, received when the amphibious vehicle he was riding detonated a land mine on February 14, 1966. A memorial service was held at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, and his remains were buried at Union Mound Cemetery in Sumner.
