Biography:
Alvin Chris Van Riesen graduated from Sheldon High School in the class of 1966. After graduation he was employed at Kenny’s Super-Value until he enlisted in the Army in October 1966. Van Riesen completed basic training at Fort Bliss, TX and attended other schooling in AZ and NJ. He arrived in Vietnam in August 1967 where he was a heavy vehicle driver. On May 26, 1968 Van Riesen was killed near Quang Nam when the truck he was driving drove over a land mine. Funeral rites were held at the First Reformed Church and his body was buried at East Lawn Cemetery, both located in Sheldon. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant and was the second casualty of the Vietnam War from Sheldon.
