Biography:
Ben Johnson grew up in the Pony Creek area of Pacific Junction. He started out in the Iowa National Guard before signing with the Army as a career and moving his family to California. He was ready for release from the service in 1965 but decided to sign up for one more hitch even though it meant a deployment. SFC Johnson left for Vietnam in July 1965 to serve with 7th Cavalry, 1st Air Cavalry Division. In letters home he indicated he was concerned because the American policy was in bad shape. On October 5th he tripped a booby trap grenade while on patrol and died in the field. He is buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno California. He was survived by his wife and five children.
