Biography:
Bernard Wendell Dickerson Jr. was from Clarinda, IA, where he graduated from Clarinda Community High School in 1964. He joined the Marine Corps in May 1966 and trained in California, eventually becoming a Corporal. After returning to Clarinda and getting engaged to his fiancée, CPL Dickerson began his tour in South Vietnam in July 1967. He served as a Rifleman in the Third Marine Division. On June 8, 1968, he wrote a letter to his parents marking 60 days until he was due to go home. Three days later, CPL Dickerson was killed by a land mine in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. His parents received the letter four days later. Memorial services were held on July 1 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda. His body was buried at Summit Cemetery in nearby Yorktown.
