Biography:
Bert Keeler grew up on a farm outside Weldon in Decatur County. He was known as a patriotic and committed individual in the community who was active in Boy Scouts, 4-H and athletics. He graduated from Clarke Community Schools in 1965 and enlisted in the Army in November. He volunteered for Vietnam service and arrived there in February 1968. He was infantry with 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry based in Quang Tri Province. Sergeant Keeler was killed in a firefight with North Vietnamese regulars on March 30, 1968. He was buried in the Green Bay Cemetery in Weldon.
