Biography:
Bruce Charles Halbach was born in Osage and attended the Stacyville school district. He was a 1967 graduate of Marian High School in Stacyville. Following high school he went to Iowa State University in Ames before returning home to work at the Co -op Elevator in Stacyville. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969. Halbach was trained in tank warfare and reached the rank of sergeant. Following training, SGT Halbach was deployed to Vietnam in June 1970 serving as an armor reconnaissance specialist with the 101st Airborne Division. On November 19, 1970, while on a reconnaissance mission, SGT Halbach aircraft was shot down by enemy forces. The helicopter burned upon crashing, killing both Halbach and a fellow serviceman. The 21 year old was buried at the Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville.
