Biography:
Burton Eugene Small grew up in Wapello and graduated from the Wapello Community School District in the class of 1967. As a young man he participated in football, the student council, and was a class officer. He later attended Southeastern Iowa Junior College in Burlington and worked for the local newspaper. Small was drafted by the Army and sent to Vietnam in August 1969. PFC Small served as an infantryman in the 50th Infantry Division. Six weeks into his tour he was killed in action. Small died on October 14, 1969 from injuries inflicted by an enemy booby trap north of Phan Thiet City. He was 20 years old at the time of his death and the only fatality of the war from Wapello. His body was buried with full military rites at the Wapello Cemetery. Small was posthumously promoted to Corporal.
