Biography:
Carroll “Butch” Gene Keehner was born and raised in Volga and was a 1966 graduate of Elkader’s Central Community High School, both in Clayton County. He joined the Marine Corps in 1966 and was sent to Vietnam in September 1967. LCPL Keehner was serving as a rifleman with the 1st Marine Division in the Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. He was killed on December 21, 1967 from a gunshot wound to the chest while handing a fellow Marine more ammo during a fire fight. He was 19 years old and was not married at the time of his death. LCPL Keehner’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Volga.
