Biography:
Charles Douglas King, known as Doug, grew up in Muscatine and served in the United States Air Force. On Christmas Day 1968, Doug King volunteered for a rescue mission onboard a HH-3E “Jolly Green Giant” helicopter leaving Nakhon Phenom Air Base. King was lowered into the Vietnamese jungle to rescue a downed pilot when he came under enemy fire. As the helicopter attempted to hoist King up the line broke stranding him behind. King’s remains have yet to be recovered from Vietnam.
