Biography:
Charles Louis Myers Jr. was born and raised in Dubuque. He was a 1963 graduate of Wahlert High School and attended Loras College. Both Myers’ brothers served in the military. Myers was drafted into the Army and began his tour in Vietnam in April 1968. SGT Myers was serving as an infantryman with the 1st Cavalry Division. In his letters home he talked about the native Vietnamese and how wonderful the kids were. He described himself as “a kid at heart.” While on a patrol southwest of Hai Lang, South Vietnam SGT Myers was wounded by an enemy booby trap. He died on July 21, 1968 from the fragmentation wounds he received. The 23-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.
