Biography:
Charles Martin “Marty” Hasper was born in Davenport in 1940 and spent his childhood in Keokuk. He graduated from the Keokuk Senior High School before joining the Army in 1958. Hasper was married in August 1959 in Fort Hood, TX to an Iowa native. He was a 1960 graduate of Officers Candidate School in Fort Benning, GA. He completed trainings in fixed wing aviation, paratrooper training, and rotary wing aviation. He was sent to South Vietnam in May 1963 as a pilot and an advisor. He completed more than 350 military exercises while in Vietnam. 1LT Hasper was killed on January 17, 1964 while supporting a South Vietnamese offensive in the Mekong Delta. The UH-1B Huey helicopter 1LT Hasper was aboard was shot down by enemy fire. He was 23 years old at the time of his death.
