Biography:
Charles William Cook was a native of Des Moines and later moved to Tama where he attended school. He was a graduate of South Tama High School in the class of 1969. After enlisting in the Army, SP5 Cook was sent to Vietnam in December 1969 to serve as a helicopter repairman. On June 28, 1971, SP5 Cook was on board a helicopter during a military mission in Quang Nam when the aircraft was shot down by an enemy force. He was taken to a military hospital where he later died. His body was buried at the IOOF Cemetery in Indianola. Cook was 19 years old at the time of his death.
