Biography:
Clayton Leon Woods graduated from Sergeant-Bluff Luton High School in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. He served as an aircraft maintenance apprentice with the 1st Cavalry Division, 229th Assault Helo Battalion. His tour in Vietnam began on October 5, 1970. On January, 16, 1971, Specialist Woods suffered a critical head wound at Lassiter Airfield in Bien Hoa Province after walking into the tail rotor of a helicopter that was conducting an engine shutdown. He was evacuated and sent to Brooke General Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Texas where he died a month later on February 19, 1971. No burial information was provided.
