Biography:
Craig Arthur Rich grew up north of Brighton along highway 1 and attended Washington High School. Loved ones described him as someone who “always wanted to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, he was very sincere, honest, and lighthearted.” After graduation he joined the Army. His first major deployment was an 18 month tour in Alaska before he was sent to Vietnam in June 1968. SGT Rich was serving as an infantryman with the 1st Infantry Division, also known as the “Big Red 1.” Two months into his tour, on August 26, 1968, SGT Rich was killed. He was fatally wounded by enemy small arms fire in the Binh Long Province, South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and unmarried at the time of his death. Rich’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Sandy Hook Cemetery in Brighton.
