Biography:
Dale Earl Benson of Tama was a student at Iowa State University before enlisting in the Army. He served as a member of the 65th engineer battalion. PFC Benson began his tour in Vietnam in December 1966. He was killed a month later on January 15, 1967 after being hit by fragments from an enemy booby trap in Binh Duong Province. PFC Benson was the second soldier from the Meskwaki Indian Settlement to be killed in the Vietnam War. A funeral service for the 19-year-old was held at Mason-Hand Funeral Home in Tama. His body was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery with full military rites.
