Biography:
Dale Howard Schmidt was a resident of Harrison County and grew up in the town of Missouri Valley. The young Iowan was drafted by the Army in the early months of 1967. He trained as an infantryman and deployed to Southeast Asia in October 1967. PFC Schmidt served in Bravo Company, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry in the 25th Infantry Division. He was killed in action during the opening days of the 1968 Tet Offensive. He died on February 3, 1968 from wounds inflicted by enemy automatic weapons fire. The 21-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Ridgewood Cemetery in Council Bluffs.
