Biography:
Daniel Carl Upton was born in Sheboygan, WI before moving to Mason City. He graduated from Mason City’s Newman Catholic High School in the class of 1966. He attended Loras College in Dubuque for 2 years before transferring to the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Upton was married in December 1967 and joined the Army in September 1968. He completed basic training at Fort Polk, LA and radar repairman training in Fort Monmouth, NJ before being deployed to Vietnam in January 1970. SP5 Upton was killed on August 14, 1970 at An Khe Army Airfield, also known as Camp Radcliff. The cause of death was classified as a mine accident and he was awarded the Bronze Star. SP5 Upton died at the age of 22 and left behind a wife and young son. His body was laid to rest at the Elmwood Saint Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
