Biography:
Daniel “Smiley” Harold Chatfield grew up in Dubuque and was a graduate of Sacred Heart Parochial School and Dubuque Senior High School. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish Holy Name Society. Chatfield was drafted by the Army in September 1966. SP4 Chatfield was sent to Vietnam as an Armor Reconnaissance Specialist in September 1967 serving with the 11th Armored Cavalry. The following year, on May 16, 1967, his unit engaged the enemy while he was aboard a military vehicle. During the fighting SP4 Chatfield received multiple fragmentation wounds and he was evacuated to a military medical facility. A few hours after sustaining his injuries he died in the 24th Evacuation Hospital. He was 20 years old at the time of his death. His body was laid to rest at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.
