Biography:
Darrell Lee Hamlin entered the Air Force after graduating from City High School in Iowa City. He was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha before being dispatched to Thailand. In May 1975, the merchant vessel SS Mayaguez was attacked by Cambodian rebels. U.S. Marines recaptured the ship anchored offshore an island that was heavily defended by Cambodian soldiers. The Mayaguez incident was the last battle of the Vietnam War. SGT Darrell Hamlin was killed along with 40 other Americans. SGT Hamlin was aboard a CH 53 helicopter when it crashed during the raid to recapture the Mayaguez. His body was buried at Roseland Memorial Gardens in Jackson, MS.
