Biography:
Daryle Wayne Batt was born in Swea City and attended school in Burt, Titonka, and Algona. He enlisted in the Army at the age of 18 years old at the end of WWII. Batt received a Bronze Star for his service during WWII. While in Japan during the late 1940s he met his wife, a Japanese national. They made their home in Waipahu, Hawaii and had five children. Batt also served in Europe as well as the Korean War with 187th Airborne Combat Regiment. Sergeant First Class (SFC) Batt was sent to South Vietnam in November 1968 with the 101st Airborne Division. In March 1969 he took a rest and relaxation trip home to Hawaii. SFC Batt received multiple fragmentation wounds during a combat operation; he was transferred to a military hospital and later died on April 27, 1969 from his injuries. His body was buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Batt was 43 years old at the time of his death and had served in the Army for over 22 years.
