Biography:
David Lefler grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School in 1960. He joined the 133rd Infantry Regiment of the Iowa National Guard. He was deployed to Vietnam on January 22, 1969 with the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Artillery Regiment as a wheel mechanic specialist. Specialist 5th Class Lefler was based at LZ Baldy in Quang Nam Province. He was killed on May 12, 1969 by friendly fire during a gunship attack on enemy forces that had infiltrated the base camp. Survived by his widow, he was initially buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City and later reinterred at Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City.
