David Lavern Campbell

David L. Campbell grew up in Orient in Adair County before moving to Clarinda. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, a personal goal, and became part of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. In what began as a routine patrol in Thua Thien Province turned deadly when the unit ran into NVA regulars. Private First Class Campbell was killed only three weeks into his tour that started April 30, 1968. He was the first member of the Clarinda community killed in Vietnam. He was buried in the Clarinda Cemetery.
