Biography:
David Lee Meyer was a 1968 graduate of Charles City High School. He was active in football and wrestling while in school. Meyer was drafted by the Army in September 1969 and started his tour in Vietnam in October 1970. Staff Sergeant Meyer was stationed with Company G, 75th Infantry, Americal Division. While on a combat mission SSGT Meyer was being extracted by a helicopter from a wooded area by a sling hoist. The sling became tangled in the canopy, breaking the rope. He was admitted to a military medical facility where he died the following day on January 11, 1971. SSGT Meyer was 21 years old at the time of his death. His body was buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.
