Biography:
David Leroy McCombs, originally of Oskaloosa, served in the Army for over eight years. The Staff Sergeant was living in Chula Vista, CA with his wife, two daughters, and a son. SSGT McCombs was serving a second tour in Vietnam when he was killed. The second tour started in May 1969. He was serving as a combat engineer with the 25th Infantry Division. SSGT McCombs was killed on October 11, 1969 when his unit engaged the enemy north of the Nui Ba Den Mountain in South Vietnam. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. McCombs’ body was returned to the United States and buried at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA. He was 26 years old at the time of his death.
