Biography:
David Lyle Mann was raised in Emmet County and was a 1968 graduate of Estherville High School. He was drafted by the Army in the fall following his high school graduation. In the Army he trained as an infantryman and achieved the rank of Private First Class. PFC Mann started a twelve month tour in Southeast Asia in March 1969 with the 1st Cavalry Division. He was killed on June 5, 1969 due to multiple fragmentation wounds during a firefight with enemy in the Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam. PFC Mann was 20 years old at the time of his death. A memorial service was held at the Union Baptist Church and his body was buried with full military rites at the East Side Cemetery in Estherville. He was posthumously promoted to Corporal by the Army.
