Biography:
David Wendell Myers was born and raised in Albion, NE. He graduated in the class of 1956 from Albion High School where he played football, basketball, and track. He went onto study at the University of Nebraska and then to Iowa State University. Myers graduated ISU with a degree in forestry. After graduation he enlisted in the Marine Corps, listing his hometown of record as Ames, IA. Myers served three years in the Marine Corps, ending his first enlistment period in May 1964. He then worked for a sporting goods store and liquor store for three years. Myers reenlisted in June 1967 and was sent to Vietnam in July 1968. CAPT Myers worked as an infantry officer and served with the 1st Marine Division south of the Demilitarized Zone. On November 20, 1968 CAPT Myers was killed in a helicopter crash. His chopper was shot down by the enemy while his unit participated in Operation Meade River. Four other Marines were killed in the crash. His body was returned to the United States and buried at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion, NE. CAPT Myers was 30 years old at the time of his death. He left behind a wife, three daughters, and a son.
