Biography:
David William Michael grew up in Oelwein and was a graduate of Walker Consolidated High School. He was drafted into the Army and began his tour in Vietnam in August 1965 serving with the 1st Calvary Division. Three months later SP4 Michael suffered gunshot wounds to his head and upper body while involved in hostile ground action in Pleiku Province and died as a result of cardiac arrest. He was scheduled to be discharged 26 days from the date he was killed. A funeral service was held at Sacred Heart Church and his body was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, both located in Oelwein.
