Biography:
Dennis Anthony Gunder of Cedar Rapids was a varsity wrestler at Jefferson High School. As a sophomore he was a member of the state runner-up J-Hawk wrestling squad in 1963. Gunder graduated in the class of 1965 before joining the Army. He began his tour in Vietnam in May 1968. While at base camp near Quang Tin, PFC Gunder suffered fragmentation wounds when a hostile force attacked. He was initially admitted to a military hospital but later died from his wounds on August 24, 1968. A memorial service was held during the Jefferson High School Homecoming that same year. His body was buried at Cedar Memorial Park in Cedar Rapids. Gunder was posthumously promoted to corporal.
