Biography:
Dennis Arnold May was born in Newton and grew up in West Des Moines. May was married and had two children when he was killed in 1966. He had served for over 6 years when he was deployed to Vietnam in September 1965 with the 1st Infantry Division, also known as “The Big Red 1.” On April 29, 1966 CPT May was a passenger aboard a Cessna L-19 observation aircraft. The plane suffered power failure and crashed and burned. The Army classified the incident as a non-hostile accident. The 29-year-old’s body was buried at the Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
