Biography:
Dennis Ben Kouhns was raised in Ogden, Iowa. Kouhns liked to read, play his stereo, make model cars and hunt. He was a member of the National Thespian Society and was in several plays. He loved motorcycles and was always mechanical. He attended Boone Junior College and then Iowa State University before joining the Army. While in Vietnam, SP5 served as a Vehicle Maintenance Expert with Troop A, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry, 4th Infantry Division. While investigating enemy activity outside of Kontum City, SP5 Kouhns’s patrol came under enemy rocket and mortar fire. A rocket impacted near him and he was mortally wounded on the morning of January 30, 1968. Flags at the American Legion building, the post office and the school flew at half-staff and businesses closed for one hour in Ogden as SP5 Kouhns was laid to rest at the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone, Iowa.
