Biography:
Dennis Dale Dautremont was raised in rural Riverside in Washington County. He graduated from Highland High School in the class of 1964 and then went on and attended the University of Iowa for two years. Dautremont was drafted by the Army in June 1967 and received basic training at Fort Campbell, KY. He completed further infantry training at Camp Polk, LA before going to Vietnam in December 1967. Less than one month into his tour PFC Dautremont was killed in action. He was stationed at Landing Zone Leslie with the 1st Infantry Division when his position came under attack by enemy mortar fire. PFC Dautremont sustained fragmentation wounds during the engagement. He was evacuated to the Navy hospital ship, the USS <i>Sanctuary</i>, where he expired on January 3, 1968. He was 21 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in his hometown of Riverside.
