Biography:
Dennis Keith Martin of Cedar Rapids was a 1964 graduate of Washington High School. He then graduated from Iowa State University in 1968 before being drafted into the Army. SP4 Martin began his tour in Vietnam in December of the following year. He was killed on July 10, 1970 while a passenger on a military aircraft. The aircraft was fired upon by a hostile ground force during a mission, causing it to crash and burn. Martin was initially reported missing in action before his body was recovered. His wife received the news of his death the morning she was supposed to fly to Hawaii to meet him while he was on leave. Turner Chapel East held a funeral service and his body was buried at Cedar Memorial Park, both located in Cedar Rapids. He left behind a wife and was posthumously promoted to sergeant.
