Dennis Lee Ritter

Dennis Lee Ritter grew up in Greene and graduated from North Butler High School. Ritter married a girl from Ankeny. Upon enlisting in the Army Ankeny was listed as his hometown of record. PFC Ritter trained as an infantryman and deployed to Southeast Asia in February 1970 with 101st Airborne Division. The 20-year-old Iowa was killed on June 25, 1970 during a firefight with the enemy in the Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam. His body was returned to the United States and buried at the Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Greene. Ritter was posthumously promoted to Corporal by the Army.
