Biography:
Dennis Ogden Johnson was raised in Eagle Grove and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in August 1967. The young Iowan began his training in San Diego, CA and achieved the rank of Private First Class. PFC Johnson deployed to South Vietnam in January 1968, arriving in Danang. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in the 1st Marine Division as a rifleman. PFC Johnson was killed when his unit took part in Operation Henderson Hill in November 1968. He died of wounds to the head and body inflicted by enemy small arms fire. Johnson was 20 years old at the time of his death. His remains were returned to the United States and buried at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.
