Biography:
Dennis Patrick Friedhoff grew up in Howard County and graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in Elma. Before entering the service Friedhoff worked for the Oliver Corp. plant in Charles City. He was drafted by the Army in March 1968 and achieved the rank of Private First Class while in the service. He was sent to South Vietnam in early August 1968 and was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry in the 1st Infantry Division. PFC Friedhoff was killed after less than one month in Southeast Asia. He died on August 27, 1968 from multiple fragmentation wounds sustained during a firefight with the enemy. The 20-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Calvary Cemetery in Elma.
