Biography:
Dennis Richard Levis was raised in Chariton and was a 1964 graduate of Seymour High School. Later he attended Centerville Community College and graduated college at Drake University in Des Moines. After finishing school he was drafted by the Army. Levis was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 196th Light Infantry Brigade. He was sent to South Vietnam in October 1969 as an infantryman. He was stationed at the Kham Duk air strip near Danang. SGT Levis died on July 20, 1970 when his unit engaged the enemy in the Quang Tin Province. He was 23 years old and married at the time of his death. Levis’ body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Allerton Cemetery in Lucas County.
