Biography:
Don Clair Harrell grew up in Madison County and graduated from Winterset High School in the class of 1966. He enlisted in the Army in February 1967 and trained as an infantryman. PFC Harrell was sent to South Vietnam in August 1967 and was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division as a driver of an armored personnel carrier. He was wounded in action in September, and then spent a brief period in a military hospital before returning to his unit. PFC Harrell was killed on October 25, 1967 due to multiple fatal fragmentation wounds inflicted while engaging the enemy in the Binh Duong Province. The young Iowan was 19 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to Winterset and buried at the City Cemetery.
