Biography:
Donald Haskins grew up in the Audubon area. After high school he enlisted in the Navy as a Seabee and was assigned to the 9th Battalion. The unit was constructing infrastructure for the military in late 1965. Believing the American mission was right, he signed up for a second tour in late 1965. Stationed at Marble Mountain Air Field south of Da Nang, he was building quonset huts on October 31st when the camp was hit by mortar fire. Builder Second Class Haskins, startled by the attack, sat up in his tent and was hit in his chest by mortar shrapnel. He was flown to the Philippines for treatment but died there. He was buried in Scranton Township Cemetery.
