Biography:
Donald Eugene Schumacher grew up in the rural Warren County town of Lacona. He joined the Marine Corps and trained as a combat engineer. Schumacher was sent to South Vietnam in July 1965 with the 3rd Marine Division. He served 12 of his 13 month tour when he was killed. He died on July 25, 1966 in the vicinity of Danang due to a hostile explosive device. He received multiple fatal fragmentation wounds to his face, chest, and both legs. He died instantly in the explosion. The 20-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Cochran Cemetery in Lacona. He left behind a wife and son.
