Biography:
Donald William Pickering grew up in Hastings and graduated from Nishna Valley High School in 1966. He joined the Army and trained at Fort Knox before beginning his tour of duty in Vietnam in February 1968 as an infantryman with the 1st Cavalry, Americal Division. On May 2, 1968 he was wounded but returned to duty. On May 8th he was killed while on a night patrol in Quang Tin Province when his jeep was hit by a mortar. Donald Pickering was the recipient of the Bronze Star for meritorious service. PFC Pickering is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak.
