Biography:
Donald Woodward Mcnamara was born in Mason City and grew up in Northwood. He attended Northwood school district and was a member of First Methodist Church. He joined the Marine Corps on March 17, 1964 and trained in San Diego. CPL Mcnamara completed domestic service as well as tours in Europe and in Cuba. He went to Vietnam in December 1966 and served in the 3rd Marine Division as a machine gunner and squad leader. He went on R&R in Hong Kong while serving in Vietnam. On July 21, 1967 CPL Mcnamara was killed due to fragmentation wounds to his entire body while in combat with enemy forces near the Demilitarized Zone. His body was buried in Graceland Cemetery in Albert Lea, Minnesota. CPL Mcnamara was 20 years old when he died.
