Biography:
Douglas Holland grew up in Inwood in Lyon County. He attended the West Lyon School District where he was active in vocal music and band. After attending Waldorf College for a time, he volunteered to serve in the Marine Corps in February 1967. He attended linguist school for 30 days and in October 1967 arrived in Vietnam where he served as an interpreter with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On January 16, 1968 while on a scout mission, he was mortally wounded when a booby trap exploded. He was the first person from Lyon County to die in Vietnam. PFC Holland was buried in Richland Cemetery in Inwood.
